With ZWEI, Beat Brogle and iart have created a subtle interactive media art piece that, thanks to the MX Framework, can be experienced in the real world.

WHAT MAKES THIS WORK STAND OUT?

In ZWEI, two abstract virtual creatures encounter one another and interact. With the help of algorithms, they develop the ability to adapt to their environment, optimise their behaviour over time and form their own distinct character. The resulting complex interactions create a new form of interplay between humans and virtual creatures, bringing algorithmic stimulus-response patterns to the forefront and raising the question: can an artificial being develop its own form of subjectivity?

We're not standing in front of the work. We're part of it.

Where could you experience ZWEI?

ZWEI was first shown at the mesh Festival Basel in autumn 2024 and subsequently formed part of the Digital Art Mile during Art Basel 2025, amongst other events. The work could also be experienced at the Tabakalera Centre in San Sebastián, the MAP Museum in Bangalore and at the Némo Biennale in Paris – in each case accompanied by a panel, workshop or talk.

Whilst many AI systems rely on large amounts of data, the Bubbles draw on their own experiences. They learn through interaction.

HOW IS THE COLLECTIVE EXPERIENCE CALIBRATED IN THE PHYSICAL SPACE?

The portable MX glasses set enables several visitors to simultaneously experience the same digital artwork from different perspectives. Calibrating the virtual framework in real space is very simple: users simply need to glance through the MX glasses at printed markers placed on the floor. They will automatically be recognised by the headset. This process ensures precise alignment between the digital content and the physical environment.

ZWEI shows how contemporary media art can be both relevant and moving.

WHAT MAKES THE COLLABORATION BETWEEN BROGLE AND IART SO SPECIAL?

ZWEI is part of a long line of artworks that have developed their emotional impact thanks to iart’s technological expertise. Because, while the behaviour of the two constantly changing virtual ‘beings’ can also be experienced via a website or as a projection , the magic of the virtual bodies floating in the same space is significantly enhanced by iart's MX Experience. We are delighted that this specific appeal also resonated with the jury of the 2026 Basel Media Art Prize!
