Art Basel 2012
Schaulager Satellite
From 4 to 17 June 2012, the Schaulager presented itself with a white pavilion designed by Herzog & de Meuron at the Messeplatz in Basel. The Schaulager in Münchenstein was closed for restoration. With its 36 meters long "satellite" though, it was present in the middle of the events during the Art Basel. iart was responsible for planning and implementing the media and lighting of the pavilion.
Screens on the outside of the pavilion gave first indications on what was presented inside: The Schaulager is a space for preserving, researching, sharing and passing on, not only a space for exhibitions. In the interior of the "satellite", the topic was presented from different points of view. Videos showed how the collection is maintained, how research is conducted on original works of art and how exhibitions are prepared in the Schaulager. Also, the artists Philipp Gasser, Zilla Leutenegger and Thomas Ruff were showed works in which the Schaulager is documented. Due to the different contributions, the visitor gained a deeper insight into the Schaulager and had the opportunity to see those spaces that are normally not accessible to visitors.
